Being more or less settled in Singapore in 2011 allowed me to pursue
a long time goal, to become certified as a Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
I was fortunate to find an evening program at the Canadian Education College which included not only
TESOL certification but also a certificate in Teaching English to Young Learners and Teenagers, with the
diplomas coming from the London Teacher Training College.
The instructor was Mike Bunyak, an excellent and dedicated instructor, and my classmates included Singaporeans, Koreans, Malaysians, and Indians. It was a rigorous program and a very good experience. I learned a lot about how people learn, how to teach, how to prepare lessons and motivate students, and gained some great insights into learning languages in general, not only English. I was able to look back on many of my language efforts and recognize many of the good (and some not so good!) characteristics of my teachers and classes.
